Microsoft Whiteboard: Retirement of legacy whiteboards and standalone Whiteboard app

Microsoft Whiteboard is completing its transition to OneDrive-backed whiteboards. Enterprise customers must migrate any remaining legacy whiteboards before the migration tooling is retired. After the retirement dates, legacy whiteboards that are not migrated or exported will be permanently deleted and cannot be recovered.

  • October 16, 2026 - Legacy whiteboards are permanently deleted.

Impact on your organization

This change affects:

  • Enterprise customers with legacy Microsoft Whiteboard content that has not been migrated to OneDrive-backed whiteboards.
  • Users with personal Microsoft accounts who use Microsoft Whiteboard.
  • Organizations that use the standalone Microsoft Whiteboard app.

After September 25, 2026:

  • The migration tool for legacy enterprise whiteboards will no longer be available.
  • Remaining legacy whiteboards cannot be migrated.

After October 16, 2026:

  • Notify affected users of migration and deletion deadlines.
  • Update internal documentation and training materials to direct users to Microsoft Whiteboard in Microsoft Teams.
  • Inform users with personal Microsoft accounts to export any whiteboards they want to retain before October 16, 2026.

There will be no recovery or migration option for legacy whiteboards after they are permanently deleted.
