Updated September 28, 2026: We have updated the content. Thank you for your patience.

[What and Why:]

We are updating how Microsoft Teams Events capabilities are organized by license type. Teams Events capabilities will be grouped into foundational event features and advanced event features. This update clarifies which licenses map to each category, attendee limits, and the relationship between Teams Enterprise and Teams Premium licensing.

Foundational event features are available with eligible Teams licenses and support creating and running Teams events.

Advanced event features are included with Teams Enterprise licenses and provide additional controls for event production, management, engagement, customization, and analytics.

License categories:

SMBMicrosoft 365 Business Basic, Standard, and PremiumNot included
FrontlineMicrosoft 365 F1, Microsoft 365 F3, Office 365 F3Not included

Event capacity:

CapabilityFoundational event featuresAdvanced event features
Number of eventsNo limitNo limit
Max attendees with interactivity (attendee mic/camera)1,0001,000
Max attendees with engagement (chat/reactions/polls/Q&A)1,0003,000
Max attendees view only (Q&A)10,00010,000

Many Teams Events capabilities moved from Teams Premium to Teams Enterprise in April 2026. The new Teams Premium license does not provide Teams Events capabilities. Customers who need all Teams Events features must assign organizers an eligible Teams Enterprise license.

For Teams Events larger than 3,000 attendees with all engagement features, organizations need to purchase attendee capacity packs and assign the licenses to the event organizer. Attendee capacity packs enable events with up to 100,000 attendees.

Microsoft reserves the right to enforce email one-time passcode verification for external event participants to protect service health and guard against fraud or abuse. This enforcement is not tied to a specific SKU tier.

[Rollout Schedule:]

General Availability (Worldwide): We will begin rolling out in late September 2026 and expect to complete by late September 2026.

[Impact on Your Organization:]

Who is affected:

  • Teams admins and licensing admins who manage Teams Events organizer licensing.
  • Teams Events organizers and producers.
  • Organizations using Teams Events across business, frontline, enterprise, education, trial, or legacy Teams Premium licensing.

Platforms/Services:

  • Microsoft Teams.
  • Teams Events.
  • Teams licensing.

What will happen:

  • Teams Events capabilities will be organized into foundational and advanced event feature categories.
  • Some features, such as Hide attendee names, will be available for all Teams events customers.
  • Advanced Teams Events capabilities require eligible Teams Enterprise licensing.
  • Teams Premium no longer provides Teams Events capabilities for the new Teams Premium license.
  • Organizations planning events over 3,000 attendees must evaluate attendee capacity pack requirements.

[Action Required/Recommendations:]

  • Review licenses assigned to Teams Events organizers.
  • Assign an eligible Teams Enterprise license to organizers who require the full suite of enterprise event capabilities.
  • Evaluate attendee capacity pack requirements for events expected to exceed 3,000 attendees.
  • Update internal support and deployment guidance to reflect the license categories and event limits described in this message.

[Compliance considerations:]

Does the change include an admin control, and can it be controlled through Entra ID group membership?Yes. Admins manage access to Teams Events capabilities through licensing assignments and related Teams admin controls.
Does the change alter how admins can monitor, report on, or demonstrate compliance activities?Yes. Organizations may need to review organizer licensing and event capacity requirements to ensure Teams Events are configured appropriately.
