[What and Why:]

We're introducing an updated Photos experience on Windows 11 to help people browse, organize, and find photos and videos across their PC and OneDrive. The experience is coming to consumer and commercial devices and will continue to respect existing controls for app installation, updates, and OneDrive access.

Starting October 15, 2026, the updated experience is expected to roll out to Windows Insiders over the next few days. We expect to start expanding to Windows 11 Retail users on October 26.

[Rollout Schedule:]

General Availability (Worldwide): We will begin rolling out on mid October 2026 and expect to complete by mid December 2026.

[Impact on Your Organization:]

Users will continue to find Photos in Start. The updated experience includes a refreshed photo library, a native Photo Viewer for images opened from File Explorer or elsewhere in Windows, and an updated native photo editor. People can use Photos with local content without signing in to OneDrive. Users who sign in with a work or school account can see their OneDrive photos alongside local content.

Existing management controls continue to apply:

  • If your organization disables or removes Store-originated apps using DisableStoreApps, the update will not be installed on affected devices.
  • If you use AppLocker packaged-app rules to block Microsoft Photos, update those rules to include the package Microsoft.OneDrive.Photos if you intend to keep blocking it.
  • DisablePersonalSync prevents personal OneDrive account sign-in in Photos. DisableNucleusSync prevents the use of any OneDrive account in Photos. These policies restrict OneDrive functionality in Photos; they do not prevent people from using the app with local content.

[Action Required/Recommendations:]

For most organizations, no new or immediate configuration is required. Review your existing Windows app-management and OneDrive policies, especially rules that intentionally block or remove Photos. If you use AppLocker to block Photos, account for the updated package name. Share this change with your help desk if users may have questions about the updated experience.

[Compliance considerations:]

No compliance considerations identified. Review as appropriate for your organization.
