Title: Some admins may be unable to access Activity Explorer in the Microsoft Purview portal
User impact: Admins may have been unable to access Activity Explorer in the Microsoft Purview portal.
More info: Affected admins may have been unable to load Activity Explorer or may have seen it reporting as unavailable due to licensing checks incorrectly returning ineligible results.
In some cases, admins may also have experienced issues retrieving sensitivity labels when using the Azure Information Protection (AIP) unified labeling client.
Final status: Following our restarting of affected services, our internal service telemetry has verified that the impact has been remediated.
Scope of impact: Some admins attempting to access Activity Explorer in the Microsoft Purview portal or retrieve sensitivity labels using the AIP unified labeling client may have been impacted.
Start time: Wednesday, April 1, 2026, at 12:00 AM UTC
End time: Sunday, April 12, 2026, at 8:00 PM UTC
Root cause: A recent service-to-service authentication component update disrupted how licensing information is validated, causing some requests to be identified as unlicensed and resulting in impact.
Next steps:
- We're further analyzing the isolated updated component to help us improve our pre-deployment testing and validations and, in our effort, to prevent similar issues in the future.
This is the final update for the event.

In some cases, admins may also experience issues retrieving sensitivity labels when using the Azure Information Protection (AIP) unified labeling client.
Current status: We’ve confirmed that the AIP unified labeling client is working as expected following the temporary mitigations that were applied. To further reduce impact, we’ve added additional service plans into the fallback licensing logic for Activity Explorer to minimize false “unlicensed” determinations while licensing validation is affected by the service-to-service authentication issue. We’ve also confirmed that restarting the affected backend services is required for the fix to fully take effect so the corrected certificate can be reloaded. A controlled service restart is now in progress, beginning with a limited scope to safely validate recovery before expanding more broadly. We’re continuing to closely monitor progress and will provide further updates as recovery continues.

Current status: We’ve validated that restarting the affected services will fully resolve the issue. We’re in the process of restarting all impacted services so the fix can fully take effect. To reduce impact while this work continues, we’ve applied temporary mitigations for affected scenarios, including a change intended to reduce impact for users of the AIP unified labeling client. We’re continuing to monitor recovery and are validating the effectiveness of these mitigations with a sample of impacted admins.
