[What and Why:]

Microsoft Viva Engage is updating newly created Engage communities so Microsoft 365 group settings for community member calendar and email subscriptions are enabled by default.

This change helps community members receive community emails and calendar invitations by default for newly created communities, supporting awareness and participation in new Engage communities.

[Rollout Schedule:]

Rollout will complete by mid-October 2026.

[Impact on Your Organization:]

Who is affected:

  • Viva Engage community owners and members.
  • Admins who support Viva Engage and Microsoft 365 group-backed communities.

Platforms/Services:

  • Microsoft Viva Engage.
  • Microsoft 365 groups.
  • My Account portal.

What will happen:

  • Newly created Engage communities will have Microsoft 365 group settings enabled by default.
  • Community members will be subscribed to receive community emails and calendar invitations by default.
  • Community owners can adjust these settings in the My Account portal.
  • Existing Engage communities will receive these updates later this fall; Microsoft will share additional timing before that rollout begins.

[Action Required/Recommendations:]

  • No admin action is required.
  • Community owners should review and adjust these settings in the My Account portal as needed: https://myaccount.microsoft.com/groups/groups-i-own.
  • Inform community owners and support teams that newly created communities may subscribe members to community emails and calendar invitations by default.

[Compliance considerations:]

Does the change provide a new way to communicate between users, tenants, or subscriptions?Yes. Newly created Engage communities will subscribe community members to receive community emails and calendar invitations by default, affecting how community communications are delivered to members.
Does the change include an admin control and, can it be controlled through Entra ID group membership?Yes. Community owners can adjust the Microsoft 365 group settings for communities in the My Account portal. The request does not specify Entra ID group-based control for this setting.
