[What and why]

We’re retiring the public preview opt-in setting for GitHub Copilot on the Viva Insights app settings page. After this change, GitHub Copilot metrics will be available by default in the Viva Insights Consumption dashboard for eligible tenants. This change provides a unified view of GitHub Copilot and Microsoft 365 Copilot adoption and usage across developers and knowledge workers.

[Rollout schedule]

General Availability (Worldwide): Beginning in mid-November 2026 and expected to complete by mid-December 2026

[Impact on your organization]

Who is affected

  • Microsoft 365 Global Administrators, Insights Analysts with global partition access, and managers who have access to consumption insights
  • Insights Administrators who manage access to consumption insights

Platforms and services

  • Microsoft Viva Insights Consumption dashboard
  • GitHub Copilot

What will happen

  • The GitHub Copilot public preview opt-in setting will be removed from the Viva Insights app settings page. After rollout, admins will no longer be able to use this setting to enable or withhold GitHub Copilot metrics.
  • GitHub Copilot metrics will be available by default in Viva Insights for eligible tenants. Admins do not need to take action to enable them.
  • Organizations that previously opted in will continue to see GitHub Copilot metrics.
  • In organizations that did not opt in, users who already have access to the relevant reports may begin seeing GitHub Copilot metrics after rollout.
  • Existing roles, report access, and privacy settings will continue to determine who can view GitHub Copilot data.

[Action required and recommendations]

No action is required. This change will happen automatically.

We recommend that you:

  • Review who in your organization can access consumption insights and related Copilot reports in Viva Insights.
  • Inform your helpdesk, analysts, managers, and business leaders that GitHub Copilot metrics may begin appearing.
  • Update internal documentation that refers to the GitHub Copilot public preview opt-in setting.
